Part 1: E-bike

We are starting a series to guide you through electric ride devices or PEVs (Plug-in Electric Vehicles) for you to choose the right device… or maybe not.

You will find a lot of information just by searching on Google.
So, what can I write about e-bikes you probably won’t ever find elsewhere?

Hmmm… How about my personal experience with e-bikes?

My E-Bike Story
I’m a 5’ 10”, 175 lbs. guy. A couple of years ago, I hurt my right foot and was in a wheelchair for a full year.

Thankfully, I’m able to stand, walk, and drive now, but with some limitations. It’s hard for me to walk for a long period and can’t run as I used to.

I used to ride my bicycle passionately on weekends but can’t do that now since it requires pedaling which would hurt my foot.

Then a friend, who is an avid e-bike rider, suggested e-bikes which don’t require much pedaling.

My First E-bike

I got my first e-bike with rather low specs because, one, I didn’t want to spend too much money on something I wasn’t sure if I would keep riding or not. Two, I didn’t want an e-bike with high speed due to my fear of injuring my foot.

The first e-bike I bought had a 48 v/10 Ah battery and a 750W motor for a 25-35 miles range on a full charge.

I bought it for around $1,000 so the price was good, but it had some build quality issues.

One mistake I made was I didn’t consider the seat height of the e-bike when buying. The seat height of the e-bike was too high for me. I needed an e-bike with a lower height because I wanted to be able to have my feet down on the ground while I was on the e-bike.

The First Time Riding

The first time I was on the e-bike, the fear of falling and getting my foot injured again kicked in.

The speed from turning the throttle was just too overwhelming at first.
However, after a couple of falls, and getting used to using the throttle, I was able to overcome the fear of falling and was able to control the speed and balance.

STANDSO E-bike Boots

Another thing that helped me was Standso’s e-bike boots.

The boots had a protective reinforcement around the lateral side of the ankle which psychologically and physically gave me the confidence that I desperately needed.

More Speed, More Power
Once I got rolling with my first e-bike, I wanted more speed and a longer battery range.
At this point, spending a little more money for an e-bike with better specs wasn’t an issue.
So, I bought an e-bike with a 52 v/20 Ah battery and a 1000W motor with a 40-75 miles range.
This one cost me $3,000, but it was worth every penny.
The height of my new e-bike was also lower than my first e-bike at 36 inches.
I loved my second e-bike with a longer battery range, but… something was missing. As I got better at controlling the speed, I wanted more speed and power.

Higher Performance
At the moment I’m writing this, I have my eyes set on my potential third e-bike with a 72 v/42 Ah battery with an option of dual battery setup which would double the power with a top speed of around 75 mph.
The price is around $5,000 which is a bit expensive for me, but I think it will be worth it and I am saving for it now.

Hopefully, I will be able to buy it soon and share it with you.

Personal Preference
Some of the things that are important to me in owning e-bikes are accessories and modifications.
I need a rack to hold my backpack or groceries.
I also need a Bluetooth speaker since I like to listen to music while riding. You may need a brighter headlight or thicker tires.
Maybe you want a more comfortable seat. Rearview mirrors. A windshield. On and on and on...
There are so many things you can add and customize whether it’s for performance, functions, or aesthetic purposes.

It’s all about your preferences and needs.
